If you thought you were going to get the scientific, linguistic and philosophical answer to: what does philanthropy mean, exit now. If I can offer you a sarcastic twist, read on.
I used to hear this “philanthropy”, that “philanthropist”, I nodded and I had no idea what the actual word means. Sounded too fancy and hypocritical for my taste… my gut was right, I should have stayed ignorant and less cynical.
Did I fall asleep under a rock and miss my notification update on the following:
Silent charity.
Posting the cheque value on the front page of the newspaper/instagram story.
Raising the flag of your cause and poking the eye of your neighbor, or maybe just a light stab.
An act of kindness equivalent to a trojan horse for a tax evasion scheme.
There is a fine line”PR company” between the mega rich and boredom (You may also replace with scandal). The result is philanthropy.
There is no good deed that is not is selfish and self-serving. why?
Silicon Valley, billionaires & philanthropy Vs darkness, famine and a definite apocalypse.
Philanthropy. A word that once echoed the noble deeds of the affluent, now resonates with a symphony of Instagram likes, retweets, and lavish galas. Who needs a quiet act of charity when you can broadcast it in 4K?
And in this age of blockchain technology, even acts of kindness come with a traceable ledger. Transparency? Yes. Heartfelt? Debatable.
Don’t flaunt your charity, just your Chanel!
People who search philanthropy might also be exhausted from hearing the following list of words: Crowd sourcing, crowd funding, charity, NGOs, WHO, UN, Social media and awareness, blockchain technology, fundraising, transparency, accountability and maybe social obligation.
Peace.
